There wasn’t a dry eye at the Opry House  Vince Gill walked onto the stage, guitar in hand, and asked the crowd to pause — to think of the people they’ve loved and lost. Then he began “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” But this time, the dedication was personal. He honored his mother, who’s about to turn 100, and whispered words that broke the room’s heart…

Vince Gill Moves Audience to Tears at the Grand Ole Opry’s 100th Anniversary

On March 19, 2025, during the Grand Ole Opry’s 100th anniversary celebration in Nashville, Tennessee, Vince Gill delivered one of the most emotional performances of the evening. Taking the stage at the historic Opry House, Gill performed his iconic ballad “Go Rest High on That Mountain”, dedicating it to his mother, who is celebrating her 100th birthday, and to his late brother, Bob.

A Personal Dedication

Before beginning his performance, Gill spoke directly to the audience: “I want you to think about someone you’ve lost. This one is for my mother — she turns 100 this year. This is about her son.” His heartfelt words set the tone for a moving tribute that honored both his mother’s milestone and the memory of his brother.

Gill was joined by fellow Opry members Ricky Skaggs and Sonya Isaacs, whose soaring harmonies added depth and beauty to the already powerful performance.

Part of a Larger Tribute

The performance coincided with the evening’s “In Memoriam” segment, which honored late country music legends including Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffett. As Gill’s voice echoed through the Opry House, accompanied by visuals paying tribute to these icons, many in the audience were visibly moved to tears.

The Story Behind the Song

“Go Rest High on That Mountain” holds deep personal meaning for Vince Gill. He began writing the song after the death of his friend Keith Whitley in 1989, but only completed it in 1993 following the passing of his brother Bob. Since then, the song has become an anthem of remembrance and healing within the country music community, performed at countless funerals and memorials.
